Last week we revealed the top 100 footballers of all-time, as voted by fans.
And there was a very controversial winner in Andrea Pirlo.
The Ranker website allows fans to upvote and downvote individuals to help form a leaderboard.
After revealing the best footballers of all-time, we’ve now decided to bring you the greatest 50 sport athletes of all-time.
There have been more than 34 million votes on this category in particular and the results are rather interesting.
Let’s take a look:
50 | Bjorn Borg | Tennis
49 | Ilie Nastase | Tennis
48 | Karl-Heinz Schnellinger | Football
47 | Bernd Schuster | Football
46 | Pirmin Zurbriggen | Skiing
45 | Helmut Rahn | Football
44 | Steven Gerrard | Football
43 | Pele | Football
42 | Moses Malone | Basketball
41 | Venus Williams | Tennis
We’re big football fans here at GMS but even we’re not too familiar with German duo Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and Helmut Rahn – although we’re well aware of Bernd Schuster. Of course, we all know who Steven Gerrard and Pele are. Elsewhere, three tennis players appear in this section with seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams just outside the top 40.
40 | Lindsey Vonn | Skiing
39 | Niki Lauda | F1
38 | Anja Parson | Skiing
37 | Chloe McCardel | Swimming
36 | Janica Kostelic | Skiing
35 | Martina Navratilova | Tennis
34 | Kjetil Andre Aamodt | Skiing
33 | George Foreman | Boxing
32 | Novak Djokovic | Tennis
31 | Dirk Nowitzki | Basketball
We’re not too knowledgable about skiing but this section features four professionals from that sport – although we definitely know who Lindsey Vonn is. Two-time world heavyweight champion, George Foreman, is well worth his place, so too is 17-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.
30 | Larry Bird | Basketball
29 | Nicklas Lidstrom | Ice hockey
28 | Pete Maravich Basketball
27 | Ayrton Senna | F1
26 | Diego Maradona | Football
25 | Babe Ruth | Baseball
24 | Lionel Messi | Football
23 | Jesse Owens | Track and field
22 | Sugar Ray Robinson | Boxing
21 | Michael Phelps | Swimming
Some of the biggest names in their respective sports feature here. Babe Ruth (Baseball), Jesse Owens (Track and Field) and Michael Phelps (Swimming) are arguably the most famous people in their sport. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi just pips fellow Argentine Diego Maradona.
20 | Rocky Marciano | Boxing
19 | Mario Lemieux | Ice hockey
18 | Rafael Nadal | Tennis
17 | LeBron James | Basketball
16 | Joe DiMaggio | Baseball
15 | Kareem Abdul-Jabbar | Basketball
14 | Bill Russell | Basketball
13 | Magic Johnson | Basketball
12 | Wilt Chamberlain | Basketball
11 | Sugar Ray Leonard | Boxing
Plenty of basketball players appear here but the name of LeBron James stands out the most. Rafa Nadal and his 19 Grand Slams make the top 20, while one of greatest boxers of ever, Sugar Ray Leonard, just misses out on the top 10.
10 | Michael Jordan | Basketball
9 | Mike Tyson | Boxing
8 | Carl Lewis | Track and field athlete
7 | Serena Williams | Tennis
6 | Jack Nicklaus | Golf
5 | Joe Montana | American football
4 | Usain Bolt | Sprinting
3 | Roger Federer | Tennis
2 | Muhammad Ali | Boxing
1 | Wayne Gretzky | Ice hockey
So, Wayne Gretzky is the greatest sportsperson of all-time. Well, he’s the greatest ice-hockey player ever being the leading scorer in NHL history, with more goals and assists than any other player. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records. Gretzky beat some absolute legends with Muhammad Ali, Roger Federer, Usain Bolt and Joe Montana making up the top-five.
