Liverpool face an anxious wait as the Premier League decide what to do with the rest of the season.

The Reds are just two wins from winning their first ever Premier League title after an incredible campaign that has seen them race into a 25-point lead.

However, there is now a genuine chance the rest of the campaign can’t be completed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s already been postponed for three weeks so hopes of it returning in April seem unrealistic.

So what happens if the season is declared null and void?

Should Liverpool still be awarded the Premier League title because they’re so far clear?

Well, Premier League legend Alan Shearer thinks not.

“Not completing the season has to be the very last option on the table,” Shearer wrote.

If, and it is a huge if, the season cannot be completed then there is no way you can have a winner or loser.

"As harsh and as horrible as that would be for some clubs, none more so than Liverpool,  it is the only outcome.

"If you cannot complete the fixtures then you cannot go handing out titles or consider relegating anybody.

"But I cannot see how it would be fair to hand them the title — despite the fact it  is obvious nobody is going to catch them.

"They only need six points to wrap it up but they haven’t got them yet so for that reason it has to be declared null and void.

"It would be very different if the season was suspended after they had got the points to win it. But they haven’t and however horrible a scenario it would be, it’s the only option."

It’s certainly a tricky situation to deal with as nothing like this has ever happened before.

For Liverpool to smash multiple records and be on the brink of glory and then have that snatched away from them is cruel.

But there’s also a decision to be made in terms of relegation. Do the bottom three clubs get demoted? Or do they get a stay of execution?

The Premier League is set to have a meeting on Thursday where they will attempt to iron out all these logistical nightmares.
