Basketball England suspends all basketball activity for two weeks due to coronavirus
Basketball England made the decision to suspend all affiliated basketball activity and events for at least two weeks as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The suspension took effect at 9 am Saturday, March 14 and includes National Leagues and competitions, England national teams, Academy leagues, talent programmes including Aspire, affiliated local leagues and Basketball England education courses.
The decision follows a consultation with Basketball England’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Cane Vishnubala and careful analysis of the advice issued by the UK Government. The full range of information was assessed at regular BE board discussions.
Although not yet mandatory, Basketball England recommends the same action apply to club practice sessions in the interests of health and safety.
The club released a statement apologising for any disruption:
“We understand the decision may result in inconvenience and disappointment to players, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters at a key period of the season, but it is our duty to protect everyone associated to our sport.
“We believe the decision is necessary to mitigate the transmission risk posed when people gather and to assist in fighting the spread of the illness in the population.”
