WWE has confirmed that Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger will be inducted into their Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2020.

It has been rumoured for the past couple of weeks that Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year during the week of WrestleMania 36.

The Japanese wrestling icon was part of a rumoured list that also included The Bella Twins, JBL, and The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith, who have since been announced for Hall of Fame induction.

WWE has now confirmed that Liger will be joining them in the Hall of Fame this year as part of the Class of 2020.

WWE said in a statement on their website: “Jushin “Thunder” Liger, one of the most revolutionary competitors in sports-entertainment history, is the latest inductee in the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2020.

“Liger joins Batista, nWo members Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash & Sean Waltman, The Bella Twins, JBL and The British Bulldog in the Class of 2020. They will take their place in history during the 2020 Induction Ceremony on Thursday, April 2, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.”

Liger only competed for WWE once in his career. This was at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn in 2015, where he defeated Tyler Breeze.

While Liger actually only had one match in WWE before his retirement, he’s well known amongst wrestling fans around the world thanks to his work in Japan and his sporadic appearances for WCW.

Beginning his career in the 1980s, Liger’s striking mask with three protruding horns immediately caught fans eyes. His high-flying, hard-hitting style has influenced many competitors, and he is widely credited as being the inventor of the iconic Shooting Star Press.

Liger joined WCW in 1991, kicking off a memorable rivalry with Brian Pillman over the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship, the precursor to the Cruiserweight Title, that is still talked about to this day.

He appeared sporadically for WCW throughout the 1990s, having rivalries against the likes of Rey Mysterio and Dean Malenko, but in his home country of Japan, he established himself as an all-time great.

Liger retired from professional wrestling in January this year, ending a career which spanned over four decades, winning the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship a record 11 times, as well as setting the record for longest reign with the title during his second reign at 628 days.

Liger was the first three-time Best of the Super Juniors tournament winner, is a former six-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, won the Super J Cup twice in 1995 and 2000, and was inducted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame in 1999.

Now, in 2020, Liger will rightfully be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during the week of WrestleMania 36.
