The World Health Organisation has launched a new social media initiative, to educate the public on correct hand-washing procedures, in a bid to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.
The campaign, titled #safehands which was launched on Friday by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus, has seen a long list of celebrities and now sports stars weigh in with videos.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is one of many to get involved, with retired Brazilian midfielder Kaka and Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean also sharing videos of themselves on Twitter.
The World Health Organisation has declared that hand-washing could be the most important measure to avoid the spread of coronavirus. Every person is advised to wash hands for at least 20 seconds, using soap and water or alcohol gel if the former is not available.
So far a number of sportswomen have been nominated to share videos themselves, including Alex Morgan and Alex Scott, but neither has posted thus far. Morgan however, did retweet FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s video to her four million followers.
One woman that has got involved in the movement is Joanne O'Riordan, an Irish activist and sports journalist. O’Riordan is missing both her legs and arms, but took the challenge anyway in order to highlight that “just because you don't have hands, doesn't mean you shouldn't wash them”.
Fingers crossed more sportswomen will continue to spread this important message.
