Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has been named a better defender than Nemanja Vidic.
The Dutch centre-back is on course to win his maiden Premier League title, assuming the season isn’t rendered null and void, and is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world.
Lifting the top prize in English football would sit nicely alongside his Champions League crown, PFA Player of the Year award and runners-up position in the Ballon d’Or voting.
However, does that mean that Van Dijk is a better player than Manchester United legend Vidic?
It’s a debate that has been discussed amongst football fans for a good year now and with every new achievement for Van Dijk, the arguments draw closer and closer.
Van Dijk or Vidic?
And the team at ESPN FC couldn’t resist debating about the Premier League giants with former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf ultimately being asked for his opinion.
To that, the Frenchman made his choice by saying: “I would go for Van Dijk. I think he’s more complete.
“I loved Vidic, because I think he was a dog, and a fantastic defender. But Van Dijk can lead the team and has range. I don’t think Vidic was capable of doing that. Hats off to Vidic, though.”
Considering Leboeuf is a World Cup-winning defender, you’ve got to take plenty of credence from his analysis, even if we’re inclined to think he’s in the minority here.
GIVEMESPORT’s Kobe Tong says
Look, Van Dijk is absolutely fantastic, but he’s not on the level of Vidic right now.
There’s an argument that the Liverpool man is a better defender pound-for-pound, but I’m not willing to agree with that claim until we see him creep closer to Vidic’s remarkable achievements.
Besides, we’re talking about a man with five Premier League titles, three League Cups, a Champions League winners’ medal and FIFA Club World Cup in his trophy cabinet.
And the fact Vidic was crowned Premier League Player of the Year TWICE shows that he was also a fantastic, standalone defender in the way that Van Dijk is being heradled.
Van Dijk and Liverpool fans alike should just be happy that he’s on course to make the debate close.
