After a tragic accident during the first stage of the Goias Superbike, motorcycle racer Indiana Muñoz has died.

The Dominican racer was competing in the 600cc category at the event which was being held behind closed doors due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

According to local media, the 29-year-old was in second place before the accident where she lost control of her bike on a bend called "zero curve". After falling to the ground she was run over by her own bike.

Medics rushed to attend to Muñoz and she was rapidly taken to a nearby hospital but was sadly pronounced dead.

In a statement, Brazil's Secretariat of Sports and Leisure said it "regrets the death of Indy Munoz, an experienced athlete in moto racing, as a result of an accident during the first stage of the Goias Superbikes".

They added: "We reiterate that the race track has all of the documents updated and complies with all the safety rules set by organisations that manage motorcycle racing and all motor racing.

"The current management of SEEL is extremely vigilant on the quality of sporting arenas especially with regards to safety."

Born in the Dominican Republic, Muñoz pursued her career as a professional motorcycle racer in Brazil. She was the country's national champion in 2013 and 2014. The latter for the 1000cc category.

Other titles to Muñoz's name included three Kawasaki Ninja 300 cups and the Yamaha R3 Cup. She was also an instructor. In light of the tragedy, the rest of the event was cancelled.
