Are UEFA correct to postpone Euro 2020 to 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic?
We asked you, the GiveMeSport readers, whether or not UEFA have got their decision right with delaying the summer competition until next year.
Yesterday, we conducted a poll on our Facebook page to see how you, sports fans from across the globe, felt on the matter of Euro 2020 being postponed for a year.
With the poll now ended, it has been an absolute whitewash of a result.
A whopping 84% of you agreed with the decision that UEFA have made, and with everything that is going on in the world at this current time, there’s no wonder to why so many people agree.
With the 16% that disagree with the decision, however, we can sympathise, it’s only been a week and we all miss football so much.
It seems like it’s been forever since Martin Tyler has bellowed out “and it’s live”, and fellow commentator Clive Tyldesley has now resorted on commentating over his wife making lasagne, the world is well and truly going mad.
With things still up in the air in relation to whether we will see league football completed this season, we can only hope that coronavirus passes quick enough for it to happen.
But, we do need to look at the bigger picture, and the bigger picture is everyone's health and wellbeing.
The competition wouldn’t be the same without the fans and the travel risks are far too great. Euro 2020 was set to be played all over Europe for the first time, rather than just having one hosting nation, and with the coronavirus spreading rapidly, this would just be disastrous for all countries involved.
With no clue of when the coronavirus will pass and when we’ll be getting the all clear that we can resume with normal life, it’s better to postpone the tournament now so it can get properly organised for next year.
Having the tournament pushed back to 2021 also means we’ll be getting back-to-back-to-back years of international football tournaments (Euro 2021, World Cup 2022 and Nations League 2023)
