The midfielder's role in steering the Reds from 3-0 down to beating AC Milan on penalties in the Champions League final surpassed the five trophies he had already won with the club.
What's more, his inspirational leadership ensured he would be enshrined alongside the likes of Ron Yeats and Emlyn Hughes in the very upper echelons of Liverpool captains.
Gerrard kickstarted a comeback of three goals in six minutes, scoring the first.
Yet his display was about so much more than scoring goals. He was ubiquitous, every cross pinpoint and each tackle perfectly timed.
The former England international's performance that night will never be forgotten and almost 15 years on, it's being recalled again.

Rafa Benitez's side, on the other hand, in spite of their achievement in Europe, could not claim to be one of the great Liverpool XI's.
That didn't stop Gerrard from putting himself toe-to-toe with those football heavyweights and ultimately coming out on top.
And even if the Rossoneri got their revenge in the final two years later, it wasn't a patch on what Liverpool achieved under their skipper that night in Istanbul.
