Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury could be next due to coronavirus outbreak

It seems like bad news spreads just as much as the coronavirus these days, but there is some positive murmurs coming out of boxing over the past 24 hours.

According to promoter Eddie Hearn, due to the coronavirus pandemic, a fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could actually happen next.

As things stand, AJ is scheduled to defend his belts against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, but it seems like that bout could now be cancelled due to the banning of mass gatherings.

The same could also be said for Fury’s expected rematch with former WBC champion Deontay Wilder, with early reports indicating that a trilogy fight could be made for this summer. It’s been well documented that the American wants to activate his rematch clause, despite being schooled in the second fight back in February.

Now, with the majority of countries banning large gatherings, it seems that both Joshua vs Pulev and Fury vs Wilder 3 could be postponed, or altogether cancelled, which then means attention will turn to future fights and there’s none bigger than a unification bout between the two Brits.

Speaking about the current situation in boxing, Hearn told Sky Sports, as per The Mirror: “Well I think, all of a sudden, does the Joshua-Fury fight start taking priority, maybe over a Pulev fight, if the Pulev fight extends beyond the summer.

“There’s so much that could happen right now.

“I mean anything is possible, but contractually Deontay Wilder is going to want his fight next.

“Whether that’s in July or whether there’s a force majeure that takes that to October, November wherever.

“Right now, for us, we’re fighting Kubrat Pulev, June 20, and it could be July 25.

“But everything is uncertain at the moment, whilst the country and the world tries to contain this pandemic.”

Of course, now would be the worst time to start planning anything, because we all know anything can happen within minutes, let alone days, weeks and months.

So although Hearn is saying Joshua vs Fury could be next, it’s certainly worth taking it with a pinch of salt.
