Chelsea have shown interest in signing Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell, with the United target set to see his £25 million price boil over in a bidding war with Manchester United, according to the Metro.
Rodwell has long been thought to be set for Manchester in the summer, with the Red Devils connected to Rodwell on many occasions and Sir Alex Ferguson being quite open about his admiration of the young star.
But now reports are speculating that Chelsea are hoping to purchase Rodwell as part of a £50 million spending spree by Blues supremo Roman
Abramovic. Despite having splashed £73 million for Fernando Torres and David Luiz in the summer, Russian Abramovic is reportedly wanting to build an unstoppable squad to challenge for the 2011/12 treble.
Everton manager David Moyes tried to quash rumours of Rodwell leaving the Toffies, saying his players weren’t planning on going anywhere in the summer.
“I am reluctant to sell Rodwell because I’m trying to build a football team, not dismantle one. I just couldn’t imagine Liverpool really wanting to sell one of their own, Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher, too easily,” he told reporters.
