Ronaldinho skill compilation is the perfect way to celebrate his 40th birthday

ATTENTION EMBARGO - DO NOT USE BEFORE 19

Barcelona and Brazil legend Ronaldinho has turned 40 years old today.

The footballing icon won't be celebrating his special day in the way he might have imagined after being sent to prison in Paraguay, but that won't stop us from heralding his sporting genius.

After all, Ronaldinho is one of the most celebrated players in the history of the beautiful game, rising to the top of the sport and doing so with the entertaining style that kickstarted his career.

Sure, he will never be mentioned in the same breath as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but what he lacked in their raw statistics, he made up for with edge-of-your-seat skills and tricks.

Plus, you could guarantee that he would always play the game with a massive smile on his face, regardless of how himself or the team were performing.

Ronaldinho's 40th birthday

Throw in two FIFA World Player of the Year awards, the World Cup, Champions League and a Ballon d'Or to create a stellar image of Ronaldinho's decorated career.

And it's no coincidence that YouTube remains littered with videos of Ronaldinho's greatest moments, continuing to rack up millions of views in spite of his retirement.

The social media site has been absolutely thronged with skill compilations over the years, but Ronaldinho is the master of them all for our money.

When Ronaldinho 'used magic'

It must be an editor's dream to trawl through Ronaldinho's career and see an endless conveyor belt of mind-blowing tricks before their eyes. We imagine that was the case for YouTuber 'Teo CRi', too.

That's because they've compiled a 10-minute montage of Ronaldinho at his shimmering best for his birthday weekend, aptly titling it: "When Ronaldinho Used Magic in Football!"

To be fair, it's easy to think that some of Ronaldinho's skills and tricks were the stuff of wizardry, so indulge in some of his brilliance and watch the full video down below:

Take. Us. Back.

What we'd pay to jump in a time machine, travel back to 2006 and see Camp Nou roar one more time as Ronaldinho absolutely skinned an opponent.

The only footballers around today that utilise skills to the same degree just haven't been able to hold their own at the same high level that Ronaldinho was able to.

Perhaps the closest we've come to replacing Ronaldinho is through his compatriot Neymar, but there's something less exciting about seeing those skills in Ligue 1 as opposed to La Liga.

Sure, Neymar also brought his box of tricks to Barcelona, but you just never got the same vibe from him as you did his all-smiling and all-action predecessor.

It just goes to show that while better players have come and gone since, they'll never be another athlete who played the beautiful game quite like Ronaldinho. Happy birthday.
