Defending French Open champion and current World number one Ashleigh Barty says she was not consulted about the decision to postpone Rolland Garros this year, but that Rafael Nadal was informed. 

The Australian born star, who won her first Grand-Slam at the French Open last year, revealed organisers had spoken to the Spaniard but that she was yet to have words with Guy Forget, the competition organiser.

Organisers had supposedly been concerned that Nadal would boycott the tournament if it was to take place as scheduled, but the defending champion is alleged to have committed to the date change. It is unclear however, why Barty was not part of the same discussions.

The French Open was initially scheduled to take place from May 24th- June 7th but has now been rescheduled for 20th September, just one week after the U.S Open is due to finish.

Of the rescheduling, Barty told AAP “I hope I get the chance to defend my title in September – any opportunity to compete is something I’ll grab with both hands.I hope I get the chance to defend my title in September – any opportunity to compete is something I’ll grab with both hands.

Barty was quick to emphasise though that are more important matters in the World right now, and that she would do whatever necessary to maintain the health and safety of all involved.
