Barcelona banned from taking part in charity FIFA tournament by PES developers Konami

Real Betis Balompie v FC Barcelona - La Liga

The coronavirus outbreak has left people around the world self-isolating in a bid to combat its spread.

One of the ways that La Liga footballers have decided to help is by partaking in a charity FIFA 20 tournament.

Every La Liga club was due to take part with a member of the playing staff representing the team.

The tournament has so far raised €20,000, with the money going into the fight against the Covid-19 virus.

Play has already kicked off, with the tournament now in the quarter-final stages.

However, not every La Liga team was able to take part.

Sergi Roberto was meant to represent Barcelona but he was eliminated from the tournament despite not playing a single game.

Why was that? Well, that's because of Pro Evolution Soccer developers, Konami.

Konami and Barcelona renewed their partnership with Barcelona for a further three years last summer.

Of course, Pro Evolution Soccer and FIFA are the two biggest football games in the world.

As direct rivals, PES didn't want Roberto and Barcelona to play and promote FIFA.

And so, per ESPN journalist Samuel Marsden, Konami didn't allow Roberto to represent Barcelona in the tournament.

Mallorca also have a partnership with Konami and so their representative, Alejandro Pozo, has also been banned from taking part.

How pathetic from Konami.

The tournament is for a good cause with money raised going to the fight against coronavirus.

But Konami thought about themselves rather than thinking about those that are suffering from this devastating illness. Shame on them.

Due to Barcelona not taking part, Eibar's Edu Expósito was given a bye to the last eight of the competition.

He will play Borja Iglesias in for a place in the top four. The Betis striker smashed Jason Remeseiro in the last-16.

Real Madrid, represented by Marco Asensio and Atletico Madrid, represented by Marcos Llorente, are both still in the competition.
