Lionel Messi has joined in the fight against coronavirus by making a €1million (£916,000) donation.
The Barcelona star has helped raise awareness about the issue, taking part in the viral ‘toilet paper challenge’, and he’s now gone a step further with a huge donation to Hospital Clinic, which is treating victims of Covid-19 and conducting research on the virus in Barcelona, and a hospital in his native Rosario, Argentina.
“Leo Messi makes a donation for the fight against Covid-19 at the Clinic. Many thanks for your commitment and your support,” Hospital Clinic wrote on Twitter.
Mundo Deportivo reported the figure to be €1m, which matches that of former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola to help buy medical supplies in Catalonia.
Guardiola, now in charge of Manchester City, donated to the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation’s campaign and his contribution will go towards the purchase and production of medical supplies and equipment to help tackle Covid-19 in the area.
A statement read: “The donation campaign promoted by the Medical College of Barcelona and managed through the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation aims to collect medical materials and financial contributions from collegiate doctors and the general population for the purchase of medical equipment and equipment that is currently lacking in health centres in Catalonia.
“It will also help finance the alternative production, through 3D printing and other methods, of respirators and personal protection equipment for healthcare staff.”
Messi and Guardiola's contributions will go a long way to helping a country that is struggling to get a grip on coronavirus.
Barcelona, along with the rest of Spain, is currently in lockdown as the country tries to reduce the impact of the virus, which is quickly spreading.
Official figures on Tuesday showed that 2,696 people have died in Spain, with close to 40,000 infected.
The death toll in the country jumped by 514 in a single day.
