Pele says Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi because he is more consistent

Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo, the never-ending debate.

In the last 10 years, every single football fan will have seen hundreds – if not thousands – of varying opinions on the two greatest footballers of the modern era.

While the opinions of ‘fanboys’ across social media rarely garner interest, it is always intriguing to see the judgement of a footballing legend on the matter.

Brazilian icon Pele is the latest to offer his view on the Messi vs Ronaldo debate and the three-time World Cup winner has decided to side with the latter.

Pele believes Ronaldo is ‘more consistent’ than his eternal enemy, before stating that Messi ‘is not a striker’.

“Today the best player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo,” Pele told YouTube channel Pilhado.

“I think he’s the best, because he’s more consistent, but you can’t forget about Messi, of course, but he’s not a striker.”

That’s the thing with Messi, he’s just never been able to find that consistency…

Oh wait, he’s possibly the most consistent player of all-time. In 856 games for club and country, the Argentine has 697 goals and 289 assists to his name, averaging 1.15 goal involvements per game.

As for Ronaldo, he has 725 goals and 220 assists in his 1000 games, an average of 0.945 goal involvements per game.

There’s no reason to not have the opinion that Ronaldo is better than Messi, but to label him as more consistent is just statistically incorrect.

But when asked who is the greatest player of all-time, guess who Pele said? You got it, himself – and in the third person!

He added: “It is a question that is difficult to answer. We cannot forget about Zico, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo.

“And in Europe, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruyff. Now, it’s not my fault, but I think Pele was better than them all.”

Never change Pele, never change.
