Maria Sharapova has had a special relationship with Italy over the years and has now expressed both her admiration and grief for the country in this time of disaster.
The 5 time Grand-Slam champion was introduced to Italy when she was only young and has been in love with it ever since. Speaking to Essentially Sports, Sharapova not that “In all fairness, it is very hard not to fall in love with.”
“In the past year, I spent most of my training in Italy and considered it my second home. I ate more pasta Genovese than anyone should be allowed to.”
At a time when the world is having to come to terms with the impact of the coronavirus, Italy has unfortunately suffered more than most so far. Sending her regards to the people affected and urging the public to do what they can to end this pandemic, Sharapova said “As we navigate through so many unknowns together, let’s do it with kindness, love and optimism- all the beautiful qualities Italia has shared with me.”
Italy had been a place of immense success for Sharapova throughout her illustrious career. The clay-court surface in Rome was where she produced some of her finest tennis as she reached three Italian Open finals in her time, in 2011, 2012 and then 2015, winning all three.
Like many, Sharapova longs for the day where she can go back and enjoy the country again. As the world does its best to fight and contain COVID-19, all that many can do is express their love and support for countries like Italy, as Sharapova has done.
