Barcelona owe so much to Lionel Messi.

When they procured the tricky Argentine for their youth setup in 2001, they never could have have foreseen that he would go on to become their all-time record goalscorer.

But almost two decades down the line and Barcelona's only problem is that they seem to rely on the little magician too much, which has led to rival fans throwing the term 'Messi FC' around.

However, that's something of an inevitability when Messi happens to be one of the greatest players in history and his goal contribution statistics continue to blow everybody out of the water.

And although it's Messi's deadly prowess in front of goal that attracts so many headlines, the fact he's also one of the best playmakers in the sport on the side makes him all the more incredible.

Messi's incredible assists

Not only is Messi always within touching distance of the European Golden Shoe, but he's regularly competing with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Jadon Sancho in the assists charts.

The 32-year-old boasts a stunning tally of 289 assists across 856 career appearances, which completely overwhelms the total of 220 from his bitter rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

It goes to show that Messi has been able to adapt his game with age by evolving into more of a playmaker, while also maintaining the traits that made him a superstar: finding the back of the net.

Messi's assist compilation

Sadly, it could be months upon months before we see Messi waving his magic wand again, but Barcelona's official social media channels have been keeping fans entertained in the mean time.

And they've decided to focus on the creative side to Messi's game by compiling some of his greatest ever assists into a seven-minute video which, at the time of writing, has amassed 125,000 views.

It's yet further evidence of the Barcelona star's remarkable footballing brain, uncanny eye for a pass and telepathic connection with his teammates. Check out the full video down below:

This is Messi's world, we're just living it.

Some of the passes where Messi takes out the entire backline by playing between the lines, catching the runs of his fellow strikers and midfielders is simply mind-blowing.

Other assists where he runs past player after player like some of his greatest ever goals are also note-worthy for just how unique and selfless they are.

That being said, we're a little disappointed that his bicycle kick assist against Sampdoria and his passed penalty for Luis Suarez were left out of the montage.

It's beggars belief how Messi can score so many goals whilst also finding the time to provide for his teammates with the regularity you'd expect from a diehard central midfielder.

Messi is truly one of a kind, but with at least two positions wrapped into it. Take a bow.
