Former UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor has slammed Islam Makhachev for his comments after the Zhang Weili vs Joana Jedrzejczyk fight at UFC 248.

The fight in question went five rounds and has been dubbed by some as one of the best UFC fights in history. Makhachev, a teammate of current UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, took to Twitter after the bout and said the following:

“This is not a woman’s sport,” he wrote.

To no surprise, Islam received heavy backlash for his comments, most notably from his teammates' bitter rival Conor McGregor - who was furious - calling the Russian "an absolute cretin".

“A Convicted Steroid cheat that will do anything to avoid impact and stall a fight, and then talks down on one of the greatest exchanges of combat ever produced by our female combatants. These little gremlins! It’s back on. Filthy rats. Shame on the game.” McGregor added on twitter.

Makhachev has since deleted the tweet.

McGregor, 31, is still lobbying for a rematch against the undefeated Nurmagomedov, who beat the Irishman by submission in their UFC 229 bout - this later led to a confrontation outside of the cage - with both fighters' teams getting involved.

The pair have since had spats at each other on social media, including Khabib's dig at Conor for hitting an elderly man in a Dublin pub last year.

McGregor was convicted of assault after the incident.

UFC President Dana White has said the Irishman will earn a rematch against Nurmagomedov if he beats Tony Ferguson next month in New York
