Lionel Messi's stats from the year 2012 are beyond outrageous.

It was the year when the Argentine produced the single greatest 12-month spell ever seen by a footballer, scoring 91 goals in total.

That's an average of a goal every four days, with his 91 strikes - and 22 assists - for Barcelona and Argentina coming in just 69 games.

To put those numbers into perspective, Messi was averaging 1.64 goal involvements per game across an entire year, ridiculous.

It's hard to pinpoint the great man's finest performance from that period, but one that will forever rank high is his display against Brazil in a 4-3 win for Argentina.

The great man notched a hat-trick and he tormented the Brazilian defence throughout.

His highlights package from the game is simply breathtaking and you can watch it below.

Eight-and-a-half minutes of pure brilliance, what a video! That final goal is just out of this world, an iconic Messi moment.

Brazil are actually one of the Barcelona legend's favourite international opponents. The 32-year-old has scored five times against the Selecao in his career.

He has notched a quintet of goals against both Uruguay and Paraguay as well, making them his three favourite opponents.

Sadly for Messi, his lack of trophies at international level with Argentina will continue to plague his claim to being the greatest footballer of all-time.

While he has done it all at club level and won every trophy there is multiple times, success has been difficult to come by with La Albiceleste.

Messi has seen his side lose on three different finals - one World Cup and two Copa Americas - with all three failures coming between 2014 and 2016.

The 2022 World Cup and the rescheduled 2020 Copa America likely represent Messi's last chances to claim silverware on the international stage.
