Eddie Jones has agreed to a substantial 25% cut in pay as the Rugby Football Union seeks a way through the coronavirus pandemic.

The RFU is set to take a mighty financial hit due to the postponement of the Six Nations and domestic rugby, £50 million being batted about at the moment.

Naturally, the Union will be looking at cutting costs in any way they can and Jones' decision to accept the cut in his wages will provide some welcome relief.

Jones was at the helm for one of England's most incredible wins as they swatted the formidable All Blacks aside in the semi-final of the World Cup in Japan last year.

However, they then went on to suffer a chastening defeat at the hands of an inspired South African side as Jones was out-thought and outclassed by his counterpart, Rassie Erasmus.

Now, it has been revealed that the head coach immediately agreed to the proposed cut.

“Eddie is overseas at present and when I contacted him regarding our executive pay reduction proposals he immediately agreed,” RFU CEO Bill Sweeney said on Thursday.

Sport around the world has come to a shuddering halt as authorities clamour to slow the spread of the frightening pandemic.

At the moment, there is no certain timeline as to when we may have live sporting events in our lives again but many fear the situation may remain unchanged for most of the year.

With that in mind, it is unclear as to when the Six nations could reach a conclusion and it may even be that the tournament is called off altogether and declared null and void.

These certainly are unprecedented times for sport and the world at large.
