Football - like everything else in the world right now - is just playing the waiting game.
With the coronavirus pandemic taking over the world, there’s very little that can be done other than listen to advice and attempt to stop the spread of the deadly virus.
Virtually every football league around the globe has stopped and there’s very little indication right now as to when they will return.
But what will happen when football eventually does return?
Will we finish the 2019/20 season? Or just scrap it and begin the 2020/21 campaign?
Well, earlier this week, the FA decided to declare all leagues below the National League and National League North and South null and void. Will a similar decision be made in professional leagues?
Well, according to Gary Neville, no.
Neville has repeatedly spoken of his desire to complete the current season and, on Saturday morning, he outlined his five-point plan in order to do so.
He tweeted:
- - Finish this season in a short time frame when safe
- - Condense next season if needed
- - Open transfer window from May and run it all the way through 20/21 to give clubs agility
- - Extend player contracts to complete 19/20
- - Financial packages for clubs in need inc non-league
It does make sense and, at this current moment, looks the most likely solution.
However, not everyone agrees with Neville’s idea.
The outspoken Piers Morgan picked holes in the theory by claiming the teams playing three matches in a week was irresponsible.
“None of this will work in reality. Nobody wants to see endless 3-times-a-week games behind closed doors, at obvious risk of injury to players. Only solution is to void this season & start again when we can. A shame for Liverpool, Leeds etc, but that's irrelevant given the crisis.”
But Neville replied saying: “Piers it will work and is likely to happen when and only when it is safe to do so.”
