WBO super middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders has had his boxing license suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) after a video was posted on social media of Saunders showing men how to hit their female partners.

In a shocking video, the Matchroom Boxing superstar uses a punch bag to explain how to react if "your old woman is giving you mouth".

He also shows how to “hit her on the chin”.

In a public statement, the BBBofC said: "We have suspended his boxer's licence pending a hearing under the board's misconduct regulation, at a time and venue to be confirmed as soon as possible."

After the video was posted, Billy Joe Saunders proceeded to apologise and said he would “never condone domestic violence”.

Despite Saunders’ apology, CEO of Matchroom Boxing and Saunders’ promoter Eddie Hearn explained how he was “appalled by the idiotic video”.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Hearn said: “I was appalled really. It was so idiotic; it was so frustrating because I know Billy well. It's one step forward, four steps back with Billy Joe Saunders”.

Hearn later added: “It's unacceptable for Joe Bloggs down the street to do it. It's much more unacceptable for a world champion boxer to be doing it. Young people are watching that video. People who are in abusive relationships are watching that video. You cannot do it, it's unacceptable."

Although the 30-year-old comes across as apologetic and full of regret, it is clear to the boxing world that he is not one to learn from his mistakes as just a mere 18 months ago Saunders was fined £100,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for a social media video.

Police described this video in 2018 as “sickening”.

Following the most recent video, Saunders says he will donate £25,000 to domestic abuse charities. This has caused even more uproar, however, as it has been perceived as an almost pathetic effort from a world champion who earns millions of pounds a year.

Before the outbreak of the coronavirus, Saunders was close to completing a deal which would have seen him face Mexico's Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in Las Vegas on May 2.

This was after he defended his title in a knockout win over Marcelo Esteban Coceres in Los Angeles in November.

Thought by most to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Alvarez would have been the odds-on favourite before going into that fight, therefore meaning an underdog win for Saunders could have really solidified his world champion status.
