Edge has said during a recent interview with ESPN that a mountain bike incident was the moment he knew he could return in-ring for WWE.

Edge made his surprise return to the WWE ring earlier this year at the Royal Rumble, his first match for the company in nine years since his sudden retirement due to a neck injury following WrestleMania 27.

The Rated-R Superstar is now scheduled to have his first singles match for WWE this weekend at WrestleMania 36 when he takes on Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match.

During a recent interview with ESPN, Edge revealed what gave him the spark and desire to return to the WWE ring once more after nine years of retirement. He discussed a mountain bike incident while filming a video with Sheamus that caused him to think again about returning to the ring.

Edge said he fell off the bike at one point and landed hard on the ground, but despite his past injury problems, his neck felt fine. This, along with all the stunt work he had done on movies and shows since his in-ring retirement, prompted him to contemplate making a WWE comeback.

The Rated-R Superstar said: “It started dawning on me that this could be a possibility when Sheamus came to town, and we were filming an episode of his Celtic Warrior workout show. He wants to do different challenging things that he hasn’t done before, and I love to mountain bike.

“In the process of doing that — this stupid competitive thing — I’m flying down a mountain, I hit this one jump, and I wiped out.

“It’s a pretty gnarly wipeout. I was going probably 20, 25 mph, landed on these stones, rolled right up to my feet. But I’m fine. I was all cut up, but my neck was fine.

“Couple that with doing all of these fight scenes over the years on sets — some pretty physical stuff, especially with ‘Vikings’ — and I thought, ‘OK, I feel really good.’”

Sure enough, Edge will now have his first singles match in WWE in nine years at WrestleMania this weekend.

In fact, he’s already had the match since this year’s Showcase of Immortals was taped last week due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. We'll just have to wait a few more days to see the match ourselves.
