Virgil van Dijk is an incredible defender.
The Dutchman has been brilliant since joining Liverpool in January 2018.
His performances reached another level last year, where he cemented himself as the best defender in the world.
His brilliance was recognised when he came ever so close to winning the Ballon d’Or in December, finishing second to Lionel Messi.
But how does he compare to the best defenders in Premier League history?
One player he’s frequently compared to is Manchester United legend, Nemanja Vidic.
The Serbian defender was a rock at the back during his eight-year spell ay United.
And, in recent times, football fans have been debating who was better of the two.
Of course, the vast majority of Liverpool supporters think that Van Dijk is a class above the former United star.
And now one Liverpool fan has created a video of Vidic’s most embarrassing moments in a red shirt.
The compilation video, which has the caption: ‘If you would kindly stop comparing this joker with Virgil van Dijk, it would be appreciated x’, has since gone viral.
You can watch it below:
Well, Vidic didn’t exactly cover himself in glory in any of these clips.
But the statement, as well as the video, is very harsh.
The former United defender was one of the best defenders of his generation. He achieved so much for the club and helped them to so much success. He’s certainly not a joker.
If you compile some of Van Dijk’s worst moments in a video, it also wouldn’t look too great on him.
So the two are most certainly comparable and there’s a debate either way as to who was better.
One man that thinks Van Dijk edges the debate is former Chelsea player, Frank Leboeuf.
“I would go for Van Dijk. I think he’s more complete,” he told ESPN a few weeks back.
“I loved Vidic, because I think he was a dog, and a fantastic defender. But Van Dijk can lead the team and has this great range of passing.
“I don’t think Vidic was capable of doing that. Hats off to him, though, he was a fantastic defender.”
