If good news is in short supply for football fans right now, then Kevin De Bruyne planning to extend his career by two years should be music to all of our ears.

The Belgian was speaking amid the current UK lockdown, with no realistic return date set for Premier League games.

"After this lockdown, I cannot stay at home. I told her [my wife] I'm going to take two years more," he said in an Instagram video, via Sky Sports.

"It's time to play football again. I miss it and it's difficult. But we are not important, football is not important. People love football, but you need to stay safe."

Had the season continued as normal, we'd likely be revelling in watching Liverpool players' highlights from this season right now.

The Reds would almost certainly be champions by now and Manchester City's talisman would be a mere afterthought.

That's a little unfair given the season the playmaker has had.

Jamie Redknapp has even suggested that he should be crowned Premier League Player of the Season:

“I would say he's the best Premier League passer I've seen, and that's including David Beckham, Paul Scholes, all of them, because he has the variation of passing," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

It's fitting that one of City's last games before football was suspended saw him put in an artful performance at the Bernabeu, pulling the strings as Pep Guardiola's side came from behind to win 2-1.

And just in case anyone has forgotten the magnificence, vision and artistry with which Kevin De Bruyne kicks a football, a video has gone viral showing some of his best assists, skills and crosses.

A truly mesmerising video (though we apologise to anyone offended by the bad language in the caption).

With 16 assists already this campaign, De Bruyne is just two shy of his best Premier League season (2016/17). He's also on course to becoming the first player to register 20 assists since Thierry Henry in 2003.

With nine games remaining - if we assume the season will be finished at some point - nobody would bet against him surpassing that tally.

What an absolute baller.
