Son Heung-min is set to participate in national service in South Korea during the coronavirus shutdown, according to reports.

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed last week that the 27-year-old had returned to his homeland for unspecified personal reasons while the Premier League calendar was suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Guardian report that the forward faces a mandatory period of four weeks' military service, which he is hoping to complete now to avoid disrupting his playing career.

While the football authorities set April 30 as a preliminary return date, it's widely accepted that there's no realistic prospect of fixtures taking place before then.

Son previously managed to avoid 21 months of national service by leading his nation to victory in the 2018 Asian Games, which earned him an exemption.

As he is currently in quarantine having only just travelled from London, he is expected to start on April 20 and will serve in the country's military corps.

He was previously quarantined away from his teammates after undergoing surgery in Seoul, before returning to training.

Tottenham's Hotspur Way centre has since been closed amid the UK lockdown during the pandemic.

Son, who has 16 goals and eight assists in the 2019/20 campaign so far, hasn't played for the club since February 16, when he scored an injury-time winner in a 3-2 win away to Aston Villa.
