Fans have ranked Barcelona's 30 greatest players - Lionel Messi only in third

Barcelona's 30 greatest players

The list of legendary players that have played for Football Club Barcelona is almost endless.

Everyone knows that a footballer's dream is to don either the Catalan club's famous red and blue stripes or the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants are the two biggest clubs in the history of football and pretty much every single big name down the years has turned out for one or the other.

So when it comes to ranking the greatest Barcelona players of all time, the top 30 is a list full of legends from all different eras.

From Johan Cruyff's 'dream team' to the Frank Rjikaard and Pep Guardiola eras, the history of Barcelona really is quite remarkable.

Fans over on Ranker have been casting their votes to name the club's greatest ever player and you can view the top 30 below. Amazingly, Lionel Messi is only in third...

30. Luis Enrique

After playing for Barcelona's arch nemesis Real Madrid for five years, Enrique managed to turn himself into a Blaugrana legend with his tireless performances between 1996 and 2004.

29. Rafael Marquez

A key man during the Rjikaard era. The Mexican excelled at both centre-back and in defensive midfield for Barca.

28. Marc-Andre ter Stegen

On course to become Barca's greatest ever goalkeeper. Ter Stegen's signing from Borussia Monchengladbach has proven to be a masterstroke.

27. Luis Figo

One of the most talented players to ever play for Barca, but his move to Real Madrid in 2000 seriously soured his reputation among the Blaugrana faithful.

26. Ivan Rakitic

The Croatian has received a lot of criticism during his time in Catalonia, but he's been a very decent servant. Not many player could attempt to fill the void left by Xavi and do as well as Rakitic has done.

25. Patrick Kluivert

A fine, fine striker at Barca. The Dutchman scored 123 goals in 259 games during what was a tough-ish era for the club.

24. Gheorghe Hagi

A very surprising entry. While Hagi is renowned as one of the finest attacking midfielders to hail from Europe, he did very little at Barca during his two seasons at the club between 1994 and 1996.

23. Laszlo Kubala

A true Barca legend. Between 1951 and 1961, the Hungarian striker scored 131 goals in 186 games, an astonishing return.

22. Deco

Like Hagi, Deco's inclusion here feels more based on his reputation rather than his time at Barca. He was decent at times, but a player of his ilk should have set the world alight in Spain.

21. Michael Laudrup

What a player. A key man in Cruyff's 'dream team' that won four La Liga titles on the spin between 1991 and 1994. However, he did leave for Real Madrid in the summer of '94 after falling out with Cruyff...

20. Victor Valdes

The man Ter Stegen will have to usurp as Barca's greatest 'keeper of all time. Had it not been for the legendary Iker Casillas, Valdes would be a bonafide legend on the international scene as well.

19. Hristo Stoichkov

The Bulgarian beast! Stoichkov's 247 games for the Blaugrana yielded a whopping 114 goals. He was the focal point of Cruyff's 'dream team' and his partnership with Romario was jaw-droppingly good.

18. Romario

He may have only spent two years with Barca, but what a two years they were. In 65 games, the diminutive Brazilian scored 39 goals. Him and Stoichkov in the same team should have been illegal.

17. Ronald Koeman

World-class defender for years and scored the winner to seal the club's first European Cup. Not bad Ronald, not bad.

16. David Villa

A key figure in Guardiola's all-conquering team, but one of Barca's 30 greatest players of all time? It's a tough one, but the fact Villa ranks so far ahead of Pedro Rodriguez is odd.

15. Rivaldo

The best player in the world for a number of years at Barca. That hat-trick against Valencia still beggars belief to this very day.

14. Samuel Eto'o

What a striker. Eto'o and Ronaldinho together was pure dynamite, with the Cameroonian scoring 130 goals in just 199 games. Barca should never have sold him to Inter Milan in 2009.

13. Sergio Busquets

A truly extraordinary defensive midfielder. Busquets has been at the base of the team for years and has calmly orchestrated the greatest era in Barca's history, an iconic footballer.

12. Dani Alves

Possibly the greatest right-back of all time and the winner of no fewer that 24 trophies with the Spanish giants.

11. Luis Suarez

Suarez's brilliance with Barca is arguably underrated. Part of the famous 'MSN' trio, the Uruguayan has 191 goals and 108 assists to his name in just 270 games. That output is outrageous.

10. Gerard Pique

An elite defender and a mainstay during Barca's most successful era. He's still one of world football's finest to this very day.

9. Neymar

Neymar ahead of Suarez? Interesting. The most expensive footballer of all time was electric at Barca, scoring 105 goals and assisting another 77 in 186 games. But surely Suarez should be ahead of him, no?

8. Ronaldo

Has a player ever made themselves so popular with a set of fans in just one season? No, no they have not. Between 1996 and 1997, Ronaldo scored 47 goals in 49 games, before moving to Inter Milan.

7. Carles Puyol

Captain fantastic. The greatest defender in Barcelona's history and a leader of men. Finding a replacement for Puyol has proved mighty tough, with the club still searching.

6. Xavi

We may never see a player like Xavi once again. The central midfielder made the game look so easy and he recorded a whopping 22 assists during the 2008/09 La Liga season alone.

5. Andres Iniesta

Iniesta with Barcelona

An attacking midfielder who didn't need to score or assist to be the best player on the pitch. The type of player that comes along once every 50 years, a true phenomenon.

4. Johan Cruyff

A world-class player and a revolutionary manager for Barcelona. The club's playing style is still based around Cruyff's philosophies to this very day - a genius.

3. Lionel Messi

Third, THIRD?! Possibly the greatest footballer of all time in third?! Disgusting scenes. It's not like Messi has 888 goal involvements in 718 games for Barcelona...

2. Ronaldinho

The Brazilian is one of the greatest players of all time and he defined the Rjikaard era at Barca with 94 goals and 71 assists in 207 games. But ahead of Messi? Absolutely not.

1. Diego Maradona

How on earth has this happened then? Maradona is a legend, don't get us wrong, but even he would admit his two years with the Blaugrana were sub-par. If this list was ranking Napoli players, he should comfortably sit atop of it. But in terms of success with Barcelona, Maradona probably shouldn't even make the top 20.

Maradona with Barcelona

The amount of legendary names is quite scary, but you feel the number one ranking has been skewed by Maradona's brilliance with other teams - namely Napoli and Argentina.

By his own lofty standards, the mercurial Argentine struggled in Catalonia and even if he was a huge success with Barca during his two years, ranking him ahead of Messi is just shameful.
