From time to time, Lionel Messi will wake up in a cold sweat after dreaming about the 2014 World Cup final.

It was the game that the Argentine could have sealed his legacy as the greatest the footballer of all time, but Mario Gotze's extra-time goal secured yet another triumph for Germany.

Ever since, certain fans have questioned whether Messi can truly be labelled the finest player in history after missing out on the sport's most illustrious prize.

Both Diego Maradona and Pele thrived at and won the World Cup - the latter on three occasions - while Cristiano Ronaldo has at least tasted international success after winning Euro 2016.

But football is a team sport and even a player with Messi's talent needs the other 10 men around him to perform at a ridiculously high standard to win a World Cup.

A video is currently going viral across social media highlighting just that. It tries to show how impressive Messi's performance was that night against Germany, labelling it one of the most 'underrated' of his career.

You can watch and judge for yourself below.

Is that really a vintage Messi performance? There are some neat dribbles and some crisp passing, but by the Argentine's lofty standards, it seems distinctly average.

Not much blame can be laid at his feet for missing the chances he did, they were incredibly difficult and against the best goalkeeper in the world at the time in Manuel Neuer.

But Messi has performed far, far better hundreds of times throughout his career for both Barcelona and Argentina.

Yes, Gonzalo Higuain's misses were pivotal. However, claiming that they cost Messi a deserved World Cup is a dangerous precedent.

Arguably the most decisive moment in that match was the injury picked up by Angel Di Maria, with the flying winger one of the stars of the tournament.
