Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has asked the club's players to donate 30% of their salaries to Manchester's hospitals.

The donation will comprise of a whole month's salary, which would likely see the total amount from the entire squad easily eclipse the £1m mark.

It's an incredible act of generosity to help support the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

The move comes less than 24 hours after health secretary Matt Hancock called upon Premier League footballers to take a financial hit to help combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

United do not want players to take a pay cut but they are onboard with a donation to charity, with many players having already made sizeable contributions to different organisations in recent weeks.

The Mirror report that the decision was made after lengthy discussions between Maguire and Ed Woodward.

You have to applaud the captain and the entire squad for their incredible generosity during times of hardship.

The subject of Premier League footballer's wages during the coronavirus pandemic has stirred up a lot of debate in recent days.

Many believe the litany of footballing stars in the UK should take significant pay cuts in order to help out the less fortunate.

But the Mirror write that the players are angered by the negative light they are currently being viewed in, especially after Hancock's controversial call out.

Many have made huge donations to the NHS and other charities helping the vulnerable in recent weeks.

The key issue is not the players 'refusing' to take pay cuts, it's the clubs - Newcastle and Tottenham to name two - who are putting non-playing staff on furlough when they could still afford to pay them.

Maguire's actions are a gentle reminder that footballers are not the men to target - it's often the men at the very top of the operation.
