Manchester United are planning a sensational swap deal involving Roma's Daniele De Rossi and Dimitar Berbatov.

The Italian midfielder was heavily linked with a move to United on Wednesday, and despite those being refuted by former Roma player Ruggiero Rizzitelli, the Barclays Premier League player are set to for a second audacious bid for De Rossi.

The 27-year-old has just a year left on his current deal at the Olympic Stadium and has spoken of how he's fallen out of love with the home supporters.

"They (Roma fans) used to treat me as one of their own, they would tell me to throw in another elbow, but now the wind has changed," he said.

Reports suggest that representatives of the midfielder have met with United officials to agree a deal, that now might include a swap deal involving Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian striker is the club's top scorer this season with 20 goals, but has seen himself left out of the club's big matches against Chelsea in the Premier League and Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

In fact the man who has kept him out of the side, Javier Hernandez, has started five of United's last six matches, and despite Berbatov's exploits this season, he could be on the way out at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been bereft of a dominating midfield player since the departure of Roy Keane and De Rossi, who has 63 caps for Italy, would fit the role ably.

Real Madrid have also been linked with the World Cup winner but Ferguson appears to lead the way in his race to secure the Italian's signature.
