What will become of the 2019/20 Premier League season?

That's been up in the air since March 13, when it was announced that all fixtures had been suspended.

To maintain the league's sporting integrity, the majority of clubs would like the campaign to be completed.

Some have a greater interest than others, not least Liverpool, who are 25 points clear at the top of the table.

There would also be serious ramifications for Bournemouth, Aston Villa, and Norwich City, the three clubs currently occupying the relegation zone, and there are further questions over European qualification and prize money.

As much as everyone would love for football to return soon - and there have been talks held about playing games behind closed doors in June - we just don't know if that's going to be practical.

Official government advice maintains that it is only permissible to go out for essential journeys and individuals must stay two metres away from one another. Both of those rules would be flouted by playing a contact sport.

And it's due to the worsening COVID-19 situation that Watford shareholder Pierpaolo Marino, who is also a director at Udinese, has claimed the Premier League season will be called off imminently.

“The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from UEFA,” Marino told Sportitalia, per Football-Italia.

“In England, the Premier League is about to release a similar statement, because the situation there is becoming very, very serious. I frankly just hope we can enjoy football again after the coronavirus.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we need to get out of this danger zone. I am worried for the next seasons, not the old one.”

The situation was slightly different in Belgium as Club Brugge were already champions. Liverpool still would have needed two more wins.

Inevitably, Marino's claims are being met with scepticism.

Udinese and Watford share owners, so it is possible that he has some inside knowledge - but until we hear it from the horse's mouth, it's probably best for Karren Brady to hold off on the cancellation party.
