Ben Stokes named Wisden's cricketer of the year ending Virat Kohli's three-year reign

England v Australia - 3rd Specsavers Ashes Test: Day Four

Considering his recent performances on the international stage, Stokes has certainly etched his name into English cricket folklore.

Now, the 28-year-old has gone one step further and has replaced Virat Kohli as Wisden's leading cricketer in the world.

Kohli proudly held onto this award for three years but it was recently announced that England's very own Stokes will occupy the top spot. Stokes is the first Englishman to win the award since Andrew Flintoff's Ashes success in 2005.

However, considering Stokes' performances in 2019, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that his name will be aligned with the likes of Kohli and Flintoff.

Lawrence Booth, the editor of Wisden, stated: "Ben Stokes pulled off the performance of a lifetime - twice in the space of a few weeks. First, with a mixture of outrageous talent and good fortune, he rescued England's run-chase in the World Cup final, before helping to hit 15 off the super over.

"Then, in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, he produced one of the great innings, smashing an unbeaten 135 to pinch a one-wicket win. Against red ball or white, he was a force of nature."

In the eyes of the British public at least, Stokes was a helping hand in rejuvenating the sport of cricket. Many who didn't have a particularly vested interest in cricket soon turned their attentions to Stokes and witnessed the making of a possible England cricket legend.

For people up and down the country, many people would be able to tell you where they were during the World Cup final super over.

A historic six from Stokes helped carry England to this super over and he, alongside Jos Buttler, led the charge as the batting pair for the final six balls.

This later followed with yet another incredible batting performance which helped dragged England to victory against the Aussies. In just a matter of weeks, Stokes became the out-and-out poster boy for not just English cricket, but the world.

Slightly further down the pecking order to Stokes but still a very honourable mention nonetheless, Jofra Archer also made Wisden's five cricketers of the year. To summarise, Stokes successes has highlighted an incredibly successful 2019 for England, with the sport having an incredibly bright future in this country.
