Popular video game Mario Kart Wii is celebrating its 12th birthday today after a lifetime of success.
Released on April 10, 2008, as the sixth instalment of the Mario Kart series, it is the most popular episode of the franchise, having recorded 37.24million sales worldwide.
The game proved a success across the world as it became the ninth best-selling game of all time, the best-selling game of the Mario Kart series, the best-selling racing game, the best-selling Mario game for the Wii, and the second best-selling game for the Wii behind only Wii Sports.
Over the course of its lifetime, the game has been a household success as millions of people were brought up racing around the 32 different tracks.
Featuring single-player and multiplayer modes, it kept children and adults alike entertained for hours on end.
The game has picked up various awards since its conception in 2008.
It won various titles in the Wii-specific awards from IGN, being named Best Racing Game and Best Online Multiplayer Game.
It was also nominated for Best Family Game for the Wii, but was beaten to the gong by Electronic Arts’ ‘Boom Blox’.
The game’s simple controls and interactivity has always made a hit inside the home regardless of their age and experience as they race around Rainbow Road or Yoshi Circuit.
Mario Kart Tour, the franchise’s latest episode, has proved a similar success on the mobile.
It was released back in September 2019 and includes 16 popular courses.
The game was a huge success for Nintendo. It was the most downloaded game on the iPhone in 2019, beating out other popular free-to-play mobile games like ‘Call of Duty: Mobile’ and ‘Fortnite’.
