The UFC President, Dana White has revealed that he would like to see Conor McGregor face Floyd Mayweather for a second time, but in the Octagon rather than a boxing ring.
White would also like to see the ‘The Notorious’ have a chance at payback against another undefeated fighter in the shape of Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Mayweather came out of retirement in August 2017 to face McGregor in a boxing fight and the American secured his 50th professional victory with a tenth round stoppage and subsequently retired once again.
There has, however, since been rumours of a return to the arena with rumoured fights with former opponents Manny Pacquiao and Marco Maidana being mentioned as well as White’s dream match of McGregor vs Mayweather 2.
McGregor has himself recently claimed this week that White has promised him an opportunity at Nurmagomedov and has labelled the current lightweight champion ‘a chicken’ for returning to Russia and withdrawing from his scheduled bout with Tony Ferguson.
In response to McGregor the Russian’s manager Ali Abdelaziz said:
“He (Conor) is not even in the conversation right now. He’s not No 1, he’s not No 2, and he’s not No 3. It’s Khabib, Justin, Tony. He’s No 4,
“He’s just like a jealous prostitute, she’s got too old for her to make money. He knows it’s over, his time is done.”
Following the first bout back in October 2018 where Nurmagomedov made McGregor submit, both fighters have since made successful returns to the Octagon following their suspensions, with the lightweight champion successfully defending his title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 242.
While the Irish superstar made an impressive return to the Octagon earlier this year by overpowering the veteran American fighter Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in Las Vegas.
So with White’s UFC 249 plans finally scuppered by executives at ESPN and Disney, the President has remained adamant that future UFC events will be held at the obscure island location.
The question remains, however, will that be the venue for either or both of these desired matches to take place?
