Remembering Gianluigi Buffon's meltdown during Real Madrid 1-3 Juventus

On this day two years ago, Gianluigi Buffon’s glowing reputation in football took a serious hit.

The Italian is renowned not only as one of the greatest goalkeepers to have played the beautiful game, but as one of football’s most honest and nice guys.

However, his clash with referee Michael Oliver during Juventus’ Champions League tie against Real Madrid in 2018 put Buffon in an incredibly negative light.

Juve were on course to complete one of the competition’s finest ever comebacks against Los Blancos, storming into a 3-0 lead at the Bernabeu to cancel out the three-goal defeat they had suffered in Turin.

But in the dying minutes of the game, Oliver pointed to the spot after a clear foul on Lucas Vazquez in the box.

Despite the decision looking pretty routine, Buffon was incensed and had a meltdown in front of the millions of viewers around the world, so much so that he was sent off for pushing Oliver.

You can watch the footage of those crazy few minutes below.

But the madness didn’t end with Cristiano Ronaldo burying the penalty to send Real Madrid through, oh no.

After the game, Buffon gave one of the most controversial post-match interviews in football history.

The Juve ‘keeper said, per BBC: “It was a tenth of a penalty.

“I know the referee saw what he saw, but it was certainly a dubious incident. Not clear-cut. And a dubious incident at the 93rd minute when we had a clear penalty denied in the first leg, you cannot award that at this point.

“The team gave its all, but a human being cannot destroy dreams like that at the end of an extraordinary comeback on a dubious situation.

“Clearly you cannot have a heart in your chest, but a bag of rubbish. On top of that, if you don’t have the character to walk on a pitch like this in a stadium like this, you can sit in the stands with your wife, your kids, having your drink and eating crisps.

“You cannot ruin the dreams of a team. I could’ve told the referee anything at that moment, but he had to understand the degree of the disaster he was creating.

“If you can’t handle the pressure and have the courage to make a decision, then you should just sit in the stands and eat your crisps.”

Amazingly, Buffon even defended those comments in the heat of the moment several days later on Italian TV, saying: “The content remains and I stand by all of it. I’d say them all again – maybe with a different type of language.

“You find a way to speak, right or wrong, that at times can seem excessive – but this is me, I am Gigi Buffon.”

Absolute madness.

Buffon did eventually apologise to Oliver and rightly so, with the Italian receiving a three-game ban for his actions and frankly, the punishment was incredibly lenient.

There have been some crazy moments in the Champions League down the years, but Buffon’s meltdown two years ago may just be the most bonkers.
