It has been rumoured for a while, but 'Saints Row 5' is now officially in development - having been confirmed by the franchise's official Twitter account.

The revelation, however, came off the back of the announcement of another title in the series. All became clear after publisher Deep Silver circulated the news that a remastered version of 'Saints Row 3', known as 'Saints Row: The Third Remastered', would be released across multiple platforms next month.

Fans were far from thrilled about this statement, however. Many Saints Row enthusiasts quickly made it clear that they could muster little excitement for a reworked version of a title that was first released in 2011. Instead, they craved a brand new game - complete with original content.

Mindful of the reaction, the Saints Row team were swift to clarify their development plans going forward on Twitter, informing fans that the remastered title was actually being worked on by a separate developer.

"A new Saints Row game is in development from Volition," stated the game's verified Twitter account. "The Saints Row: The Third remaster is being done by Sperasoft."

And with that 'Saints Row 5' was confirmed.

Continuity within the franchise will remain, as Volition is the same company that worked on 'Saints Row 4', originally released back in 2013.

Late last year, Klemens Kundratitz, the CEO of Koch Media - who ultimately own the Saints Row franchise - spoke about the faith that his company had in Volition when it came to their work on the series.

"With Volition, we have the creators of all the Saints Row games as an internal studio and they’re not going to be distracted by anything else from creating our next game under this important franchise," stated Kundratitz.

"Saints Row is very close to our hearts, and we’ll talk about it next year. For the time being, we just wanted to get the word out that it’s coming and it’s going to be great."

Judging by Kundratitz's words, the decision to place the 'Saints Row 3' remake in the hands of Sperasoft looks to have been driven by a desire to have Volition focus entirely upon 'Saints Row 5'.

A 2020 release date seems to have been planned for the new game. However, as with much in the current climate, this could easily be subject to change.

The good news for Saints Row fans, though, is that a new game is definitely on the way.
