Schlupp stakes his claim

Brentford boss Nicky Forster admits on-loan striker Jeffrey Schlupp may have earned himself a starting berth for next week's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Carlisle.

In something of a dress rehearsal for the showpiece, Schlupp starred by netting twice to secure the Bees all three points in a 2-1 success over the Cumbrians.

Forster said: "Jeffrey had two chances apart from a first-half header and he took them both and that's the mark of a real striker. I was delighted for him and I think it will be the first of many. He turned down the chance to play for Germany Under-19s against Belgium to stake a claim for a place in the side at Wembley and he probably hasn't done himself any harm."

He added: "Leicester were keen for him to extend his loan and I was delighted to keep him. You saw why.

"Carlisle had a couple of chances in the first 20 minutes and didn't take them but when ours came we did and sometimes that can be the only difference between winning and losing.

"I thought we looked very good in the second half but have to admit I was disappointed not to keep a clean sheet."

Carlisle boss Greg Abbott was not too downbeat, opting to focus on the positives.

He said: "The lads are really, really down but unlike the Peterborough game there were plenty of positives. We've got an important game on Tuesday (at Yeovil) so it's how we bounce back from this which is the most important thing.

"The thing we need to learn from this game is that if you make mistakes, concede goals and don't take your chances when you have them these kinds of results don't change.

"On another day, we might have got the first goal and gone on from there but it wasn't to be and it's no good moaning about it, we just have to roll our sleeves up and make sure we don't make the same errors again."
