Barcelona's recent Champions League campaigns have certainly been ones to forget.

In 2017/18, the Blaugrana blew a three-goal lead against AS Roma in the quarter-finals, losing 3-0 to the Serie A side in the Italian capital having won 4-1 in the first-leg.

It was one of the Champions League's greatest ever comebacks, but Barca somehow managed to outdo their failings last season against Liverpool.

The La Liga champions took a 3-0 lead to Anfield against a weakened Liverpool side, but still somehow managed to lose 4-0.

Barca haven't won the competition since 2015 when Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar were at the peak of their powers.

The only reason they haven't added to their European Cup collection is through their own ineptitude, but Xavi Hernandez bizarrely believes it's down to luck.

Speaking to DjMaRiio, the Barcelona legend said: "Barca cannot play to the historic luck that other clubs have had [in the Champions League]."

When asked whether he was referring to Real Madrid, Xavi replied: "Yes. Why not? Not only Madrid but other clubs have had it.

"Barcelona were lucky at Stamford Bridge, with Iniesta's goal - that is luck.

"I mean, if you don't have a good season in La Liga , you're fourth, fifth, sixth... and you win the UCL. Barca hasn't been through that, Madrid has had that bit of luck."

Sorry Xavi, but winning three Champions Leagues on the spin is not down to luck.

While there were moments of fortune for Los Blancos along the way, they still managed to see off the best Europe has to offer for three years and they always turned up when it mattered.

Beating Juventus 4-1 and Liverpool 3-1 in back-to-back finals is a monumental achievement.

Barca even rode their luck against Liverpool last season at the Camp Nou and they still managed to blow it.

That's been the difference and until the Blaugrana can overcome the mental anguish of their past two Champions League campaigns, they will continue to fail.
