Ronaldo Nazario is possibly the greatest out-and-out striker in football history.

At his peak, the Brazilian was simply unstoppable. A concoction of speed, power, skill and deadly finishing, Ronaldo could do things on a pitch that others wouldn't dare dream about.

In the summer of 1997, he was the hottest property in football. He had just enjoyed a sensational campaign with Barcelona in which he scored 47 goals in 49 games.

Come the end of that summer, Ronaldo had signed for Italian giants Inter Milan where he continued his insane goal scoring form, but things could have been so different.

That's because El Fenomeno had a very serious offer from Rangers, one in which the Scottish club proposed to only use him in European games in order to fulfil their dreams of winning the Champions League.

His agent, Giovanni Branchini, recalled the details of the offer for the then FIFA World Player of the Year.

"The clause in his contract was a novelty at the time and it scared a lot of clubs off," he said, per FourFourTwo.

"The three who were really interested were Inter, Lazio and Glasgow Rangers, who followed negotiations all the way.

"The offer from Glasgow Rangers was incredible.

"They told us he didn't have to play on a Saturday in the Scottish league. They were desperate to win the Champions League and were going to allow him to play in the European matches only.

"But Inter had followed him from when he used to play in Brazil. Barcelona reneged on a new contract and Inter were the first club to meet the release clause, so he went there."

Just picture the scene; Ronaldo sat in the stands at Ibrox on a freezing cold Saturday in Glasgow preparing for a big night in Europe on Tuesday instead of getting kicked to pieces by Dunfermline.

Had the transfer been pulled off by Rangers, you have to wonder how Scottish football would have benefitted as a whole to this very day.
