Barcelona's Luis Suarez humiliated David Luiz during win over PSG five years ago

Barcelona’s 3-1 victory at Paris Saint-Germain took place five years ago today.

That’s right, it’s been half a decade since one of the Blaugrana’s finest ever sides took a massive step towards their latest Champions League victory by running away comfortable winners in France.

It was such a dominant first leg performance that the return fixture at Camp Nou, unlike the dramatics that would follow two seasons later, was something of a foregone conclusion.

But aside from the flowing football of Luis Enrique’s side on the night, perhaps the most memorable feature of the game was Luis Suarez’s display against David Luiz.

It was Suarez’s first season in Spain having waved goodbye to Liverpool, as well as serving his ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini, and the Uruguayan was getting into the groove in Barcelona colours.

Having notched his inaugural strike for the club against APOEL Nicosia in the group stages, Suarez then ramped up the scoring we’d seen from him in the Premier League for the knockout rounds.

And the forward’s magnum opus that season came in the French capital when he profited from one of Luiz’s most famous disasterclasses to bag himself a pair of goals.

While Luiz is undoubtedly a top class centre-back, it’s well publicised that he can often have a defensive meltdown on the biggest stage and that had freshly occurred in the summer prior.

So, it was additionally painful to see Luiz run completely ragged by Suarez when it had been less than 12 months since his nightmarish display in Brazil’s 7-1 humiliation versus Germany.

But this disputably took the biscuit with the now Arsenal player allowing himself to be nutmegged for both of Suarez’s goals at the Parc des Princes and both by the scorer in question.

And all of that came after Suarez had already nutmegged the Brazilian with a tackle that was so brilliant it literally landed him flat on his backside.

Yeh, humiliating to say the least… so, we’ve decided to commemorate that night’s footballing notoriety by putting Suarez’s individual highlights on the stage, courtesy of YouTuber ‘TentwoOld’.

You know that ‘he’s already dead’ Simpsons meme? Yeh, that.

It’s a strange sight when a world-class footballer casually has an off-day in front of millions of viewers and it’s all the more disastrous when their opposition happens to be on top of their game.

We can be pretty confident in saying that Barcelona would have won regardless of Luiz’s display, but his inability to keep his legs shut undoubtedly added some bells and whistles to the occasion.

But perhaps Luiz could take solace from the fact Barca were so electrifying throughout the season, eventually crowning themselves European champions with a 3-1 final victory in Berlin.

The Catalans claimed the scalps of City, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Juventus along the way, although we’re pretty sure Luiz left the boldest chalk outline on the concrete of them all.
