British basketball players have often struggled to make it overseas, but the story of Pops-Mensah Bonsu epitomises that the sky's the limit, whatever your nationality.

A new documentary by Monumental Sports Network titled “No Mercy” charts Mensah-Bonsu’s rise to Basketball stardom, from his days as a freshman at George Washington University, to his role now as general manager of Capital City-Go-Go in the NBA G League.

A former NBA star, who played for five different franchises, including the Mavericks, Spurs and Raptors, Pops went on to star all around the world- in Russia, Greece, Spain, Italy, Israel and of course Turkey, where he was named the Turkish Basketball League player of the year in 2012.

Born In Tottenham, England, to Ghanian Parents, the documentary also focuses on Pops early life, including his move to New Jersey for sophomore year and his days at George Washington, fondly recounted by former coaches, teammates and himself.

“When I first came over, Basketball was not the goal,” he says. Despite this, his athletic prowess was evident to all who knew him. He broke records in the state of New Jersey in track and high-jump before he focused his attention on basketball in his freshman year.

His work ethic, and determination is what set him apart from other college players. “Coming to George Washington, I tried to start as a freshman,” he recalls. “I did that, so I tried to be one of the better players in the conference. I did that. I got most improved player in my sophomore year, and then I was like ‘you know what, let’s try to be one of the best players in the country.’”

A central point to Pops lasting legacy is not just his Basketball, but rather his general aura. It was obvious that he was destined to be more than just a player and as one journalist comments, “the coolest part of the story about Pops is what isn’t written yet.”

Now the first general manager of Capital City Go-Go- the affiliate club to the Washington Wizards, Pops continues to cement his legacy as one of Basketball’s most inspiring faces.

The documentary premieres on Thursday 16th April on the Monumental Sports Network facebook page. Pops will be watching live and commenting in the chat, so this is certainly not one to be missed.
