100 laps around a garden. War veteran Captain Tom Moore has completed his remarkable number and has managed to raise more than £12m for the NHS in the process. In order for Tom to complete the challenge, he would complete laps of his 25m-long garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire. The original aim was to raise around £1,000 by doing 100 laps. But, just short of turning 100 at the end of the month, the money he raises will go directly to the NHS as a way of expressing gratitude for all the help he’s received over the years. However, the £1,000 target has been smashed as the total amount that Tom’s raised stands at £12,238,200 on his JustGiving page. Speaking to BBC News after completing the feat, he said:“This is for everyone who is finding the current circumstances difficult, and it is difficult. Everyone who is staying indoors, you're all being very very good.He added: “You've all got to remember that we will get through it in the end. It will all be right. It might take time, but it will all be OK. The sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away.”Born and raised in Keighley, Yorkshire, he went on to be enlisted in the eighth battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (8 DWR) at the beginning of the war. In 1940 he was selected for Officer training and was later posted to 9 DWR in India, later serving and fighting on the Arakan.Following the Japanese surrender, he went to Sumatra before returning to be an instructor at Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington.

Over the past couple of years, Tom has recovered from both a hip replacement and skin cancer and says the NHS has been ‘marvellous’ towards him.

Initially set up by his daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, the fundraiser is his way of showing his gratitude to those who have helped him over the years – at a time when resources are limited due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hannah first set the target to £1,000, but this was then raised to £100,000. Once Tom also beat that, it jumped up to £250,000, followed by £500,000.

In a flash, Tom had hit the million-mark, which is going to continue to rise in the coming weeks.
