The gaming community has shown its caring side as thousands attended an online funeral for one member.

Numerous people came on to Final Fantasy to pay tribute to the well-liked deceased character, known as Ferne Le’roy in the video game.

The individual had a vast number of people pay their respects after their fellow gamer died from the coronavirus; partaking in a virtual funeral procession and solemn walk across the map to honour them.

Being announced on Reddit, the online community began to walk from the desert city of Ul’dah on the game’s Zalera server.

They were joined by characters from another server - Coeur - where Ferne was known as an alternative character called Poppy Rose.

Nearly the entire group wore black as they walked across the Final Fantasy world, crossing many different lands until the sun rose.

The route included the forests of the Central Shroud and finished underneath the Guardian Tree - a sacred site within the forests.

It lasted for around 30 minutes as the community paid their respects.

The Final Fantasy community took to social media to praise the actions of the online members, highlighting their amazement at how many turned out.

One person said: “The #FFXIV community never ceases to amaze me. Such a huge turnout and show of respect, community and camaraderie at this memorial service.

"My view distance couldn't handle so many people! May the fallen player rest in peace, my condolences to all involved. Be safe, everybody!"

Another person added: "This was my first time experiencing something like this. There were people attending that took up 2-3 zones of the base game which are large in general. So many showed up to give their condolences to their fellow adventurer, their friends and families."

Final Fantasy is a Japanese fantasy/science game franchise that is seen as one of the most popular series of all time - the latest edition of the game was released in 2016.
