Remembering when a referee took a selfie with Kaka straight after giving him a yellow card

Happy 38th birthday, Ricardo Kaka.

The Brazilian superstar is one of the most iconic footballers to have ever graced the game, a silky playmaker that was unplayable in his pomp.

Kaka’s time with AC Milan was the pinnacle of his glittering career as he scooped the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year awards in 2007.

Sadly, injuries took their toll during his stint with Real Madrid, but there’s no denying that Kaka is one of the greatest and most popular footballers of all-time.

In fact, Kaka – who boasts over 16m followers on Instagram and 29.6m on Twitter – is so admired across the globe that even referees are desperate for a selfie with him.

Last year the Brazilian icon participated in a charity match on behalf of his homeland versus Israel and the official proceeded to yellow card Kaka before asking for a picture with him!

It’s a very wholesome moment and you have to hand it to the referee – she saw her opportunity to get a snap with an all-time great and she took it!

Kaka was far from the only former Brazilian superstar on show as well. Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos and Cafu all appeared in the game which the Selecao won 4-2.

But the referee only wanted a pic with Kaka, which says everything about how idolised the great man is.

His legacy extends far beyond his elegant greatness on the football pitch.

Since 2004, Kaka has been an ambassador for the United Nations’ World Food Programme and has been previously named by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in the world.

The Brazilian called time on his stellar playing career back in December 2017, scoring 161 goals and assisting another 147 in the 529 games of his domestic career.

They don’t make footballers quite like Ricardo Kaka these days.
