The Women’s European Championship will be moved from next year to July 2022, according to the Danish FA.
With both the Men’s EURO’s and the Olympics already postponed until next year, the fate of the Women’s tournament, which was initially scheduled for 2021, had been up in the air. A potential solution was to play the Women’s competition directly after the Men’s, but the understanding is that postponing the tournament by a year works better scheduling wise, with the new dates coinciding with the beginning of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The tournament will still be hosted in England, having last done so in 2005, with the choice of venues set to remain the same. These include Old Trafford for the opening game, Bramall Lane, Brentford and Brighton Community Stadiums, Leigh Sports VIllage, Manchester City academy stadium, New York Stadium, Stadium MK, St Mary’s and Wembley for the final.
England, Sweden and defending champions the Netherlands are the only three sides to have qualified so far, with the other 13 spots still up for grabs. The play-offs for the competition were supposed to take place in October of this year, but these will likely be re-arranged as well.
The United Kingdom, France, Spain and the Netherlands had all been granted broadcasting rights for the competition, but it remains unclear whether these deals will have to be renegotiated.
England are yet to win the European Championship, having finished as runners up on two occasions. Germany are the most successful team in the competition’s history, with eight titles to their name.
