Wayne Rooney has achieved an awful lot in his football career.The former Everton striker is the leading all-time top scorer for Manchester United and England, while only Alan Shearer is above him in the Premier League rankings.He’s also won his fair share of silverware, collecting five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups, one Champions League, one Europa League and one Club World Cup.Rooney - who now plies his trade for Derby County as a player-coach - can yet build on his remarkable haul of 310 goals in 743 appearances for the Rams, Everton, United and DC United.However, for all the 34-year-old has and could still achieve in football, in the eyes of many, one of his finest moments inadvertently came on social media.Back when he was playing for United and Twitter was emerging as a popular platform among players, Rooney posted a message he probably intended to send privately to Rio Ferdinand.Rooney - who joined Twitter on April 23, 2011 - tweeted on the same day: "Hi rio do u want picking up in the morning pal."
What seemed to be an innocent mistake from an inexperienced Twitter user became a running joke among football fans and is still dug up from time to time.
Almost a decade later, Rooney continues to see the funny side of it and even acknowledged its anniversary today.
If you’re wondering whether or not Ferdinand ever got that lift (presumably to Carrington) from Rooney, nobody else knew the answer until six years after the original tweet.
Asked if he ever accepted Rooney’s offer, Ferdinand told JOE in 2018: "I did a couple of times, yeah.
"I never knew where that came from. For years I saw it and didn’t think anything of it."
Twitter doesn’t easily forget things like this, so you can expect it will resurface yet again when the 10-year milestone rolls around in 12 months.
