Chelsea & Arsenal legend Ashley Cole voted Premier League's greatest full-back

Chelsea and Arsenal legend Ashley Cole has been rightfully crowned as the Premier League’s greatest ever full-back.

Football fans’ votes were cast over on Football Tweet’s official Twitter account, with Cole beating Gary Neville and Patrice Evra in a three-man final.

Cole is widely regarded by many of one of the finest full-backs to have ever played the game. Renowned for his expertise in both defence and attack, the Englishman was in a league of his own in his prime.

With Arsenal, Cole won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and was a key man in Arsene Wenger’s famous Invicibles side.

After his £5m move to Chelsea in 2006 – which saw William Gallas move in the other direction – Cole secured four more FA Cups, one more Premier League title and the Champions League in 2012.

Cole won Football Tweet’s final poll by an absolute landslide, earning 58.8% of the final 18,618 votes.

The 39-year-old – who was named in the PFA Team of the Year on four occasions – also won his semi-final by an enormous margin with 72.7% of the 20,783 votes cast.

You have to feel that Manchester United stalwart Dennis Irwin was pretty harshly judged here…

In the other semi-finals, both Evra and Neville secured victory comfortably. The former accrued 59.6% of the 23,900 votes cast, with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson in a distant second.

As for Neville, his winning margin of 55.4% was the lowest, with Trent Alexander-Arnold the most voted for runner-up with 30.3%. Lauren and Lee Dixon’s low tallies highlighting the evident recency bias.

But while the semi-finals had some controversial elements to them, there can be absolutely no denying that Cole is a worthy winner.

The Englishman is right up there with the likes of Cafu, Dani Alves and Philipp Lahm as one of the greatest full-backs to don a pair of football boots in a professional setting.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal would kill to have a player of his ilk on their rosters in the present day!
