Patrick Vieira's highlights from the 2006 World Cup are absolutely unreal

Patrick Vieira is routinely lauded as one of the finest midfielders of all-time.

The Arsenal legend was the complete footballer in his hay day, a physical presence with immense skill and a keen eye for important goals.

His achievements with the Gunners will never be forgotten, but it’s not often you hear someone wax lyrical about his brilliance on international duty with France.

But make no mistake, Vieira – who earned 107 senior caps for Les Bleus – was an absolute monster at the base of France’s midfield alongside the iconic Claude Makelele.

The 2006 World Cup was without doubt the greatest showing of his ability on the international stage, a tournament in which the French agonisingly lost in the final on penalties to Italy.

Zinedine Zidane is rightfully remembered as France’s main man from that summer, as the Real Madrid legend played football from a different planet.

But Vieira’s contribution behind the playmaker was arguably just as imperative. A highlight compilation of Vieira from the 2006 World Cup has popped up on Twitter and it really is a trip down nostalgia avenue.

From scoring and assisting in the last-16 win over Spain, to tackling Cristiano Ronaldo with ease and all the way back to bullying Brazil’s array of midfield stars in the quarter-final, Vieira played like a man possessed.

That assist for Franck Ribery’s goal against Spain was worthy of Andres Iniesta or Andrea Pirlo.

It’s official folks, we may have a new contender for the most underrated World Cup campaign of all-time here.

The only blemish on his campaign out in Germany was the fact he picked up an injury in the final and had to be substituted on 56 minutes, which is of course no fault of his own.

Aside from that, Vieira was pretty much flawless, a ‘Rolls Royce midfielder’ if there ever was one.

Thankfully for the towering midfielder and the likes of Thierry Henry, they had secured World Cup glory eight years earlier on home soil – Vieira actually only made two appearances in the 1998 tournament.

Had Vieira not gone off injured in 2006, an additional star ay be sitting atop France’s badge these days…
