You might remember that last week, Barcelona announced their intentions to raise money for the fight against COVID-19 by selling the naming rights for their stadium, the Nou Camp.
The idea is to attract rich businesspeople to plump up large sums of money, which Barca could then immediately donate to crucial research projects working to stop the spread of the virus.
It’s the first time since its opening 63 years ago that anyone has had the opportunity to pay for the right to name Barca’s stadium, largely considered to be among the best in world football.
And with the coronavirus crisis spreading, and more money desperately needed to fund the effort to prevent it, it all sounds like a great idea to fetch a large sum for a great cause.
But nevertheless, we’re sure Barcelona were just as surprised as we are to hear that Alki David - cannabis business partner of boxing legend Mike Tyson – wants to get involved!
British businessman David, who is worth around £2.6 billion, has been close friends with Mike Tyson for many years, and has an interesting track record of achievements and scandals behind him.
He owns a number of companies across the home-shopping, video-streaming and health industries, but most know him as the guy who owns part of Tyson’s cannabis empire.
The 51-year-old has made no secret of his determination to land the naming rights to the Nou Camp, and as per the Sun, he believes that he is in a great position to secure them.
He said: "This is an opportunity that I am bullish about. It is an historic moment in the history of sport and it fits well with my current plans.
"Contact was opened at the start of the week and I am quietly confident the deal will be secured.
"This deal with the Nou Camp is another way to help. It is full of all the energy that Barcelona stands for.
"My health company has been working hard with top virologists, including the UK's Dr Dorothy Bray, to look at any way we can hit this virus."
Despite being arrested in the Caribbean last year after allegedly storing £900,000 worth of cannabis on board his private jet, David is confident that the blot on his record won’t hold him back.
He said: "I have no criminal record, despite last year's fun in St Kitts and various money-grabbing attempts in other meaningless civil claims.
"My record is as clean as it gets among the big hitters in the business world. Barcelona and Alki David would be a beautiful partnership!"
